ICRL: Learning to Internalize Self-Critique with Reinforcement Learning
arXiv:2605.15224v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language model-based agents make mistakes, yet critique can often guide the same model toward correct behavior. However, when critique is removed, the model may fail again on the same query, indicating that it has not internalized the critique's guidance into its underlying capability. Meanwhile, a frozen critic cannot improve its feedback quality over time, limiting the potential for iterative self-improvement. To address this, we propose learning to internalize self-critique with reinforcement learning(ICRL), a novel framework that jointly trains a solver and a critic from a shared backbone to convert critique-induced success into unassisted solver ability. The critic is rewarded based on the solver's subsequent performance gain, incentivizing actionable feedback. To address the distribution shift between critique-conditioned and critique-free behavior, ICRL introduces a distribution-calibration re-weighting ratio that selectively transfers critique-guided improvements compatible with the solver's own prompt distribution. Additionally, a role-wise group advantage estimation stabilizes joint optimization across the two roles. Together, these mechanisms ensure that the solver learns to improve itself without external critique, rather than becoming dependent on critique-conditioned behavior. We evaluate ICRL on diverse benchmarks spanning agentic and mathematical reasoning tasks, using Qwen3-4B and Qwen3-8B as backbones. Results show consistent improvements, with average gains of 6.4 points over GRPO on agentic tasks, and 7.0 points on mathematical reasoning. Notably, the learned 8B critic is comparable to 32B critics while using substantially fewer tokens. The code is available at https://github.com/brick-pid/ICRL.
Tensor-Network Formulation of the Traveling Salesman Problem and Variants
arXiv:2311.14344v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: This work presents a tensor-network formulation of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) and several of its variants. The approach represents candidate tours with tensor-network layers, weights them by Boltzmann factors, and enforces constraints through explicit counting filters. This formalism also yields an explicit tensor-network marginal formula whose zero-temperature, exact-arithmetic limit identifies an optimal feasible tour through a sequential marginal rule. At finite $\tau$ and finite precision, the implemented extraction is a heuristic whose behavior depends on numerical contrast, calibration, and near-degeneracies. We adapt the construction to several generalizations of the TSP and apply it to the Job Reassignment Problem, as a representative industrial integration. The experiments are deliberately small and illustrative; they contextualize the method against exact and heuristic references but do not establish general computational superiority over specialized classical solvers.
Binary LCD Codes and Their Graph Representations
arXiv:2407.07689v5 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: We give a complete characterization of simple graphs whose adjacency matrices generate binary linear complementary dual (LCD) codes. In particular, we completely characterize a distance-regular graph which yields an LCD code in terms of the intersection array parameters. This necessary and sufficient criterion strengthens the previously known sufficient conditions and unifies the cases of complete, Hamming, Johnson, and Grassmann graphs. As further applications, we prove that non-isomorphic conference graphs with $q \equiv 1 \pmod 8$ yield inequivalent codes and we classify all simple graphs with idempotent adjacency matrices on at most $13$ vertices via mass formulas for binary LCD codes.
LatencyScope: A System-Level Mathematical Framework for 5G RAN Latency
arXiv:2511.21277v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: This paper presents LatencyScope, a mathematical framework for computing one-way uplink and downlink latency in fifth-generation radio access networks across diverse system configurations. LatencyScope models latency sources across the protocol stack, including radio interfaces, scheduling decisions, processing delays, frame structures, and hardware and software constraints, while capturing dependencies among configuration parameters and stochastic sources of delay. The framework also includes a configuration analyzer that uses these models to search billions of candidate settings and identify those that satisfy latency-reliability targets under user-specified constraints. We validate LatencyScope on two open-source fifth-generation radio access network testbeds, as well as on measurements from a public commercial fifth-generation network. The results show that LatencyScope closely matches empirical latency distributions, captures observed lower and upper latency bounds, and substantially outperforms prior analytical models and widely used fifth-generation network simulators. LatencyScope can determine whether ultra-reliable low-latency communication targets are feasible for a given deployment and, when they are feasible, efficiently find satisfying configurations, helping network operators reason about latency modeling, configuration analysis, and system-level bottlenecks.
MHGraphBench: Knowledge Graph-Grounded Benchmarking of Mental Health Knowledge in Large Language Models
arXiv:2605.15589v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in the mental health domain, yet it remains unclear how well they capture related biomedical knowledge and how reliably they apply it to clinically salient structured judgments. Here, we present a knowledge-graph (KG)-grounded benchmark for assessing LLMs on mental-health entity recognition, relation judgment, and two-hop reasoning. The benchmark is derived from PrimeKG and comprises nine task families with KG-supported answers and controlled negative options. Experiments across 15 closed- and open-source LLMs reveal a persistent recognition-to-judgment gap: leading models achieve near-ceiling performance on entity typing and on the small relation-typing subset, yet they still struggle with relation prediction and two-hop reasoning. Additionally, short KG-derived snippets benefit some models but degrade performance for others. Moreover, output-format reliability can substantially influence measured performance under constrained multiple-choice settings, highlighting the critical role of response validity in benchmark-based evaluation. MHGraphBench should therefore be interpreted as evaluating agreement with a curated mental-health slice of PrimeKG under a constrained multiple-choice interface, rather than as a direct assessment of real-world clinical safety.
General-Purpose Co-Evolutionary Construction of Parallel Algorithm Portfolios for Multi-Objective Binary Optimization
arXiv:2605.15729v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Despite recent progress in constructing generalizable parallel algorithm portfolios (PAPs), no general-purpose approach is yet available for multi-objective binary optimization problems (MOBOPs). To fill this gap, this paper proposes domain-agnostic co-evolution of parameterized search for multi-objective binary optimization~(DACMO), which features two technical innovations. First, we propose a neural instance representation architecture that decouples domain-invariant and instance-specific features, enabling class-consistent instance generation across varying dimensions without problem-specific instance generators. Second, we introduce LLM-based automatic search operator generation into PAP construction, extending the search space from parameter tuning of predefined templates to operator-level algorithm design. We evaluate DACMO on four representative MOBOP classes to demonstrate its effectiveness as a general-purpose PAP construction method: the multi-objective match max problem~(MMMP), the multi-objective knapsack problem~(MKP), the multi-objective contamination control problem (MCCP), and the multi-objective complementary influence maximization problem~(MCIMP). Experimental results show that DACMO can be directly applied to all four problem classes without modification, outperforms PAPs built from classic MOEA templates, and achieves performance comparable to a privileged state-of-the-art baseline that relies on manually designed problem-specific instance generators, while outperforming it on two of the four evaluated problem classes.
Hardware-Compatible Single-Shot Feasible-Space Heuristics for Solving the Quadratic Assignment Problem
arXiv:2503.09676v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Research into the development of special-purpose computing architectures designed to solve quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) problems has flourished in recent years. It has been demonstrated in the literature that such special-purpose solvers can outperform traditional complementary metal--oxide--semiconductor architectures by orders of magnitude with respect to timing metrics on synthetic problems. However, they face challenges with constrained problems such as the quadratic assignment problem (QAP), where mapping to binary formulations such as QUBO introduces overhead and limits parallelism. In-memory computing (IMC) devices, such as memristor-based analog Ising machines, offer significant speed-ups and efficiency gains over traditional CPU-based solvers, particularly for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In this work, we present a novel hardware-aware QAP optimization framework designed for IMC hardware. By co-designing the local search heuristic with the underlying hardware, we exploit the intrinsic massive parallelism that allows for computing of full neighbourhoods simultaneously to make update decisions. We ensure binary solutions remain feasible by selecting local moves that lead to neighbouring feasible solutions, leveraging feasible-space search heuristics and the underlying structure of a given problem. Our approach is compatible with both digital computers and analog hardware. We demonstrate its effectiveness in CPU implementations by comparing it with state-of-the-art heuristics for solving the QAP.
Small Generalizable Prompt Predictive Models Can Steer Efficient RL Post-Training of Large Reasoning Models
arXiv:2602.01970v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Reinforcement learning enhances the reasoning capabilities of large language models but often involves high computational costs due to rollout-intensive optimization. Online prompt selection presents a plausible solution by prioritizing informative prompts to improve training efficiency. However, current methods either depend on costly, exact evaluations or construct prompt-specific predictive models lacking generalization across prompts. This study introduces Generalizable Predictive Prompt Selection (GPS), which performs Bayesian inference towards prompt difficulty using a lightweight generative model trained on the shared optimization history. Intermediate-difficulty prioritization and history-anchored diversity are incorporated into the batch acquisition principle to select informative prompt batches. The small predictive model also generalizes at test-time for efficient computational allocation. Experiments across varied reasoning benchmarks indicate GPS's substantial improvements in training efficiency, final performance, and test-time efficiency over superior baseline methods.
Detecting Localized Density Anomalies in Multivariate Data via Coin-Flip Statistics
arXiv:2503.23927v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Detecting localized differences between two samples is a central task in scientific data analysis, required for the identification of signal events, regime changes, or model mismatch. We introduce EagleEye, a method that pinpoints local over- and under-densities in multivariate feature spaces. EagleEye assigns each point an anomaly score by encoding its ordered k-nearest-neighbour list as a binary membership sequence and testing whether the cumulative number of successes in this sequence is consistent with a binomial (coin-flipping) null model. In the presence of a genuine local anomaly, neighbours will preferentially belong to one of the two datasts, yielding an excess of ``successes'' relative to the binomial null model. These local, pointwise detections are consolidated into interpretable anomaly sets through a deterministic refinement procedure that can also estimate the irreducible background and local density anomaly purity. We demonstrate EagleEye's efficacy in three scenarios. We first consider an artificial data example with known localized over- and under-densities. Second, we demonstrate how EagleEye may be used for new physics searches at particle collider experiments in the presence of systematic background modelling differences. Finally, we conduct a climate analysis study that reveals localized changes in spatiotemporal temperature-pattern recurrence.
Enabling Intelligent Bidirectional Charging: A Real-World Communication Interface Between Electric Vehicles, Charging Infrastructure, and a Control Optimizer
arXiv:2605.15731v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper presents the real-world implementation and field validation of a user-aware bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) charging system developed within the Mobilities for EU and DymoBat projects in Dresden. Building on earlier simulation frameworks, the system enables transition from conceptual models to operational deployment in urban environments. To support grid flexibility and sustainable mobility, the solution combines real-time vehicle and user data with a centralized optimization platform to enable dynamic charging and discharging decisions. The architecture integrates a wireless On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) interface and an open middleware node connected via a 5G campus network, allowing early access to vehicle state-of-charge before plug-in. A tablet-based interface captures user preferences such as departure time and energy demand, which are incorporated into the optimization together with grid conditions. A key contribution is a multi-level communication architecture linking the EV, charging station, user interface, and grid control center using the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). The system integrates software, embedded hardware, and network communication for real-time charging management. Field deployment at Ostra Sport Park in Dresden demonstrates feasibility, improved load balancing, and robust vehicle-to-grid operation. The results show that early data acquisition and predictive control can enhance system efficiency. This work provides a practical benchmark for positive energy districts and future urban e-mobility systems.
DR Tulu: Reinforcement Learning with Evolving Rubrics for Deep Research
arXiv:2511.19399v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Deep research agents perform multi-step research to produce long-form, well-attributed answers. However, most open deep research agents are trained on easily verifiable short-form QA tasks via reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards, which does not extend to realistic long-form tasks. We address this with Reinforcement Learning with Evolving Rubrics (RLER), where rubrics are constructed and maintained to co-evolve with the policy model during training. This allows the rubrics to incorporate newly explored information from search and contrasting model responses, enabling better fact checking and more discriminative on-policy feedback. Using RLER, we develop Deep Research Tulu (DR Tulu-8B), the first fully open model that is directly trained for open-ended, long-form deep research. Across four long-form deep research benchmarks in science, healthcare, and general domains, DR Tulu substantially outperforms existing open deep research agents (by 15.6% over Tongyi DR on average) and matches or exceeds proprietary deep research agents (by 0.7% over OpenAI DR on average), while being significantly smaller and cheaper per query (1000x cheaper than OpenAI DR per query).
Extrapolation Guarantees for Perturbation Modeling Under the Additive Latent Shift Assumption
arXiv:2504.18522v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: We consider the problem of modeling the effects of perturbations like gene knockouts on measurements such as single-cell RNA counts. Given data for some perturbations, we aim to predict the distribution of measurements for new combinations of perturbations. To address this challenging extrapolation task, we posit that perturbations act additively in a suitable, unknown embedding space. We formulate the data-generating process as a latent variable model, in which perturbations amount to mean shifts in latent space and can be combined additively. We then prove that, given sufficiently diverse training perturbations, the representation and perturbation effects are identifiable up to orthogonal transformation and use this to derive extrapolation guarantees for unseen perturbations that can be expressed as linear combinations of seen ones. To estimate the model from data, we propose the perturbation distribution autoencoder (PDAE), which is trained by maximizing the distributional similarity between true and simulated perturbation distributions. The trained model can then be used to predict previously unseen perturbation distributions. In support of our theoretical results, we demonstrate through simulations that PDAE can accurately predict the effects of unseen but identifiable perturbations, and showcase the method on combinatorial gene perturbation data.
Multi-level Self-supervised Pretraining on Compositional Hierarchical Graph for Molecular Property Prediction
arXiv:2605.16088v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Self-supervised pretraining on molecular graphs has emerged as a promising approach for molecular property prediction, yet most existing methods operate at a single structural granularity and treat bond information as auxiliary edge attributes rather than as an independent semantic layer. In this work, we propose MolCHG, a multi-level self-supervised pretraining framework built upon a novel Compositional Hierarchical Graph that organizes molecular structure into four types of nodes across three semantic levels. By introducing a bond graph that operates in parallel with the atom graph, our architecture elevates bond-level information to independently evolving node representations, enabling fragment nodes to aggregate atom-level and bond-level semantics on an equal footing. We design three level-specific pretraining objectives: an atom-bond cross-view contrastive task that aligns the atom-view and bond-view representations within each fragment, a fragment-level functional group prediction task to inject domain-relevant chemical knowledge, and graph-level structure prediction tasks to encode global molecular topology. Experiments on nine MoleculeNet benchmarks demonstrate that MolCHG achieves the best performance on seven datasets across both classification and regression tasks, remaining competitive with the strongest baselines on the rest. Ablation studies further confirm that the multi-level supervision signals are complementary and that each component contributes to the overall performance.
Neurosymbolic Object-Centric Learning with Distant Supervision
arXiv:2506.16129v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Neurosymbolic learning can use symbolic rules to provide supervision for latent concepts from weak labels, but it commonly assumes that the entities referenced by these rules are already specified. Object-centric models decompose images into slot-like representations; however, such slots are not necessarily aligned with the predicates required for symbolic reasoning. We investigate object-centric neurosymbolic learning under distant supervision, where the object-level arguments of a logic program are learned directly from images using only global task labels. We introduce DeepObjectLog, a probabilistic neurosymbolic model that integrates a slot-based perceptual encoder with a probabilistic logic layer. The encoder predicts objectness and class probabilities for candidate object representations, while the logic layer marginalizes over latent objectness and class assignments to compute the likelihood of the observed label. This formulation provides a differentiable task-level learning signal for object-centric perception without requiring per-object labels, masks, bounding boxes, or heuristic set matching. Evaluations across diverse visual reasoning tasks demonstrate that DeepObjectLog achieves superior out-of-distribution generalization to compositional, object-count, and rule shifts compared to neural object-centric and standard neurosymbolic baselines.
Adaptive Conformal Prediction for Quantum Machine Learning
arXiv:2511.18225v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Quantum machine learning seeks to leverage quantum computers to improve upon classical machine learning algorithms. Currently, robust uncertainty quantification methods remain underdeveloped in the quantum domain, despite the critical need for reliable and trustworthy predictions. Recent work has introduced quantum conformal prediction, a framework that produces prediction sets that are guaranteed to contain the true outcome with a user-specified probability. In this work, we formalise how the time-varying noise inherent in quantum processors can undermine conformal guarantees, even when calibration and test data are exchangeable. To address this challenge, we draw on Adaptive Conformal Inference, a method which maintains validity over time via repeated recalibration. We introduce Adaptive Quantum Conformal Prediction (AQCP), an algorithm which provides asymptotic average coverage guarantees under arbitrary hardware noise conditions. Empirical studies on an IBM quantum processor demonstrate that AQCP achieves the target coverage level and exhibits greater stability than quantum conformal prediction.
Qimax: Efficient quantum simulation via GPU-accelerated extended stabilizer formalism
arXiv:2505.03307v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Simulating Clifford and near-Clifford circuits using the extended stabilizer formalism has become increasingly popular, particularly in quantum error correction. Compared to the state-vector approach, the extended stabilizer formalism can solve the same problems with fewer computational resources, as it operates on stabilizers rather than full state vectors. Most existing studies on near-Clifford circuits focus on balancing the trade-off between the number of ancilla qubits and simulation accuracy, often overlooking performance considerations. Furthermore, in the presence of high-rank stabilizers, performance is limited by the sequential property of the stabilizer formalism. In this work, we introduce a parallelized version of the extended stabilizer formalism, enabling efficient execution on multi-core devices such as GPU. Experimental results demonstrate that, in certain scenarios, our Python-based implementation outperforms state-of-the-art simulators such as Qiskit and Pennylane.
Overfitting has a limitation: a model-independent generalization gap bound based on R\'enyi entropy
arXiv:2506.00182v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Will further scaling up of machine learning models continue to bring success? A significant challenge in answering this question lies in understanding generalization gap, which is the impact of overfitting. Understanding generalization gap behavior of increasingly large-scale machine learning models remains a significant area of investigation, as conventional analyses often link error bounds to model complexity, failing to fully explain the success of extremely large architectures. This research introduces a novel perspective by establishing a model-independent upper bound for generalization gap applicable to algorithms whose outputs are determined solely by the data's histogram, such as empirical risk minimization or gradient-based methods. Crucially, this bound is shown to depend only on the R\'enyi entropy of the data-generating distribution, suggesting that a small generalization gap can be maintained even with arbitrarily large models, provided the data quantity is sufficient relative to this entropy. This framework offers a direct explanation for the phenomenon where generalization performance degrades significantly upon injecting random noise into data, where the performance degrade is attributed to the consequent increase in the data distribution's R\'enyi entropy. Furthermore, we adapt the no-free-lunch theorem to be data-distribution-dependent, demonstrating that an amount of data corresponding to the R\'enyi entropy is indeed essential for successful learning, thereby highlighting the tightness of our proposed generalization bound.
How to Stop Playing Whack-a-Mole: Mapping the Ecosystem of Technologies Facilitating AI-Generated Non-Consensual Intimate Images
arXiv:2602.04759v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: The last decade has witnessed a rapid advancement of generative AI technology that significantly scaled the accessibility of AI-generated non-consensual intimate images (AIG-NCII), a form of image-based sexual abuse that disproportionately harms and silences women and girls. There is a patchwork of commendable efforts across industry, policy, academia, and civil society to address AIG-NCII. However, these efforts lack a shared, consistent mental model that clearly situates the technologies they target within the context of a large, interconnected, and ever-evolving technological ecosystem. As a result, interventions remain siloed and are difficult to evaluate and compare, leading to a reactive cycle of whack-a-mole. In this paper, we contribute the first comprehensive AIG-NCII technological ecosystem that maps and taxonomizes 11 categories of technologies facilitating the creation, distribution, proliferation and discovery, infrastructural support, and monetization of AIG-NCII. First, we build and visualize the ecosystem through a synthesis of over a hundred primary sources from researchers, journalists, advocates, policymakers, and technologists. Then, we conduct two detailed walkthroughs to demonstrate the usefulness of the ecosystem in 1) making sense of new AIG-NCII harms using a case study of Grok and 2) mapping a clearer tech policy landscape using U.S. federal law and 63 state laws. We conclude with a vision for future AIG-NCII research that refines the edges of the ecosystem, recommending researchers to study critical relationships between technologies and potential ripple effects from different interventions. Our goal is to produce an AIG-NCII technological ecosystem that provides a clear, shared terminology and framework for stakeholders to move into the future of AIG-NCII prevention with clarity and foresight.
Neural simulation-based inference of the Higgs trilinear self-coupling via off-shell Higgs production
arXiv:2507.02032v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: One of the forthcoming major challenges in particle physics is the experimental determination of the Higgs trilinear self-coupling. While efforts have largely focused on on-shell double- and single-Higgs production in proton-proton collisions, off-shell Higgs production has also been proposed as a valuable complementary probe. In this article, we design a hybrid neural simulation-based inference (NSBI) approach to construct a likelihood of the Higgs signal incorporating modifications from the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), relevant background processes, and quantum interference effects. It leverages the training efficiency of matrix-element-enhanced techniques, which are vital for robust SMEFT applications, while also incorporating the practical advantages of classification-based methods for effective background estimates. We demonstrate that our NSBI approach achieves sensitivity close to the theoretical optimum and provide expected constraints for the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider. While we primarily concentrate on the Higgs trilinear self-coupling, we also consider constraints on other SMEFT operators that affect off-shell Higgs production.
Chladni states in Ising Spin Lattices
arXiv:2507.05961v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Low-temperature spin dynamics can become trapped in long-lived patterns shaped by the geometry of the interaction network. Here we introduce Chladni states: spin configurations obtained by binarizing the eigenmodes of the interaction Laplacian. These graph-spectral patterns organize the metastable configurations reached by Ising systems under non-ergodic relaxation. The resulting Topological Mode Decomposition provides a compact way to monitor and reconstruct frozen spin configurations in ferromagnets, frustrated antiferromagnets, and spin glasses.
Offline Reinforcement Learning with Universal Horizon Models
arXiv:2605.15603v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Model-based reinforcement learning (RL) offers a compelling approach to offline RL by enabling value learning on imagined on-policy trajectories. However, it often suffers from compounding errors due to repeated model inference on self-generated states. While geometric horizon models (GHM) alleviate this issue through direct prediction over a discounted infinite-horizon future, they remain challenged in accurately modeling distant future states. To this end, we introduce universal horizon models (UHM), a generalization of GHM that directly predicts future states under arbitrary horizons. Leveraging this flexibility, we propose a scalable value learning method that employs a winsorized horizon distribution to stabilize training by capping excessively large horizons. Experimental results on 100 challenging OGBench tasks demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms competitive baselines, particularly on tasks with highly suboptimal datasets and those requiring long-horizon reasoning. VSPO: Vector-Steered Policy Optimization for Behavioral Control
arXiv:2605.15604v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Modern language models often need to optimize a primary accuracy objective while also accommodating secondary behavioral preferences, such as verbosity, agreeableness, or the level of technical expertise in its response. In practice, a base model may exhibit a desired behavior very rarely or not at all. Thus, endowing the model with a target behavior creates a sparse behavioral reward bottleneck. To address such multi-objective problems, we introduce Vector-Steered Policy Optimization (VSPO) which employs a steering vector associated with the target behavior to control the behavior intensity of the generated rollouts. VSPO is obtained by modifying GRPO to sample rollouts with varying steering intensities. This process can be interpreted as an on-policy latent self-distillation procedure where the model internalizes its steering vector. By varying steering intensities, VSPO upsamples rare behaviors and enriches rollout diversity, which alleviates the sparse reward issue and provably accelerates the policy optimization. Through comprehensive theory and experiments, we establish that VSPO has favorable properties compared to vanilla reward shaping and other alternative approaches. Specifically, under a bandit abstraction, VSPO provably achieves better iteration complexity than reward-shaped GRPO when the steering-induced distributions are sufficiently aligned with the target behavior. We evaluate VSPO across multiple reasoning benchmarks, including MATH and MMLU-Pro, for four target behaviors: explanation expertise, confidence expression, robustness to misleading context, and response verbosity. Our results show that VSPO consistently improves the control along target behavior while maintaining or improving task accuracy compared with reward shaping, teacher-trace distillation, and guidance-based baselines.
Viability of perturbative expansion for quantum field theories on neurons
arXiv:2508.03810v4 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Neural Network (NN) architectures that break statistical independence of parameters have been proposed as a new approach for simulating local quantum field theories (QFTs). In the infinite neuron number limit, single-layer NNs can exactly reproduce QFT results. This paper examines the viability of this architecture for perturbative calculations of local QFTs for finite neuron number $N$ using scalar $\phi^4$ theory in $d$ Euclidean dimensions as an example. We find that the renormalized $O(1/N)$ corrections to two- and four-point correlators yield perturbative series which are sensitive to the ultraviolet cut-off and therefore have a weak convergence. We propose a modification to the architecture to improve this convergence and discuss constraints on the parameters of the theory and the scaling of N which allow us to extract accurate field theory results.
Syntax Without Semantics: Teaching Large Language Models to Code in an Unseen Language
arXiv:2605.15607v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) achieve high pass rates on code generation benchmarks, yet whether they can transfer this ability to languages absent from pretraining remains poorly understood. We introduce PyLang, a minimal imperative language absent from all pretraining corpora, and evaluate frontier models zero-shot and fine-tuned Qwen3 (4B, 8B, 32B) on 352 problems. We find that fine-tuning quickly teaches syntax but fails to transfer semantic competence: Python outperforms PyLang by up to 19% across all configurations, and no intervention (multi-task learning, preference tuning, code infilling, or latent-space objectives) closes the gap. An LLM judge reveals that frontier models select an identical algorithm to Python 80% of the time, yet cannot translate it into a working PyLang implementation., and CKA analysis confirms that fine-tuned models converge to nearly identical internal representations across languages (CKA > 0.97) while diverging at the output stage. We term this the implementation fidelity gap: models possess language-agnostic algorithmic understanding but cannot express it in an unfamiliar language. Our findings highlight the need for training methods that decouple reasoning from language-specific realization.
Transformer-like Inference from Optimal Control
arXiv:2605.15608v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Decoder-only transformers compute the conditional probability of the next token from a sequence of past observations. This paper derives, from first principles, inference architectures that solve the same prediction problem - and in doing so, recovers transformer-like layer operations as a consequence of optimal control theory. The framework is developed for two model classes: a nonlinear model of discrete-valued processes, directly motivated by the transformer, and a linear Gaussian model as a tractable baseline. For both model classes, the prediction objective is reformulated as an optimal control problem whose solution yields an explicit inference algorithm, the dual filter, with a layer structure that mirrors the layer structure of a decoder-only transformer. Numerical experiments provide a comparison of the optimal control to attention weights from a trained transformer. These experiments reveal that when the embedding dimension is insufficient, the transformer implicitly exploits non-Markovian structure.
