arXiv:2605.18187v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: We develop a microscopic theory of disorder-induced attenuation and mutual coherence degradation for a quantum particle in a classical one-component plasma. The random potential originates from equilibrium thermal fluctuations of the ionic charge density within the random phase approximation. Its correlator retains an unscreened $1/r$ tail, leading to a Coulomb logarithm in the eikonal localization scale $\ell(k)$. In the weak-disorder regime $\ell(k) \propto k^2 / \ln(\kappa L)$, while in the strong-disorder limit $\ell \propto (\ln(\kappa L))^{-1/3}$. Building on the same disorder model, we evaluate the mutual coherence function (Cooperon) of an electron beam and derive a closed analytical expression for the phase structure function $D_\phi(\rho)$. At large transverse separations the coherence decays as a power law $\gamma(\rho)\sim \rho^{-\eta}$, with an exponent determined by the disorder strength. The transverse coherence length $\rho_c$ satisfies a scaling relation $\rho_c \sim \lambda_D \sqrt{\ell/L}$, linking the eikonal attenuation scale with the loss of quantum coherence. Numerical estimates for aqueous electrolytes under transmission electron microscopy conditions are given. A relativistic extension confirms that the same scaling holds for relativistic beams, with the eikonal coupling given by $A_{ m rel}=1/(\hbar v)$ and approaching the finite high-energy limit $1/(\hbar c)$.

arXiv:2604.24197v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Frontier image generation has moved from artistic synthesis toward synthetic visual evidence. Systems such as GPT Image 2, Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana 2 Lite, Grok Imagine Image Quality, Qwen Image 2.0 Pro, and Seedream 5.0 Lite combine photorealistic rendering, readable typography, reference consistency, editing control, and in several cases reasoning or search-grounded image construction. These capabilities create large benefits for design, education, accessibility, and communication, yet they also weaken one of society's most common trust shortcuts: the belief that a plausible picture is a reliable record. This paper provides a source-grounded technical and policy analysis of synthetic visual risk. We first summarize the public capabilities of recent image models, then analyze public incidents involving fake crisis images, celebrity and public-figure imagery, medical scans, forged-looking documents, synthetic screenshots, phishing assets, and market-moving rumors. We introduce a capability-weighted risk framework that links model affordances to real-world harm in finance, medicine, news, law, emergency response, identity verification, and civic discourse. Our findings show that risk is driven less by photorealism alone than by the convergence of realism, legible text, identity persistence, fast iteration, and distribution context. We argue for layered control: model-side restrictions, cryptographic provenance, visible labeling, platform friction, sector-grade verification, and incident response. The paper closes with practical recommendations for model providers, platforms, newsrooms, financial institutions, healthcare systems, legal organizations, regulators, and ordinary users.
arXiv:2605.18603v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Vision-Language Models (VLMs) deployed as situated agents in high-resolution visual environments require active perception -- the ability to dynamically decide where to look through operations like zooming, cropping, and panning. However, current training paradigms produce models that mimic the surface form of such operations without functionally depending on their outputs, a phenomenon we term lazy perception. We trace this to a fundamental learning asymmetry: when coarse global views combined with language priors suffice for moderate accuracy, the model has no incentive to learn harder multi-step visual search. If a model can succeed without actively looking, it will never learn to look. This motivates Starve to Perceive, a training paradigm that constrains visual bandwidth -- restricting each observation to a tight token budget so that no single view suffices for task completion, making active perception the only viable strategy. Despite requiring no auxiliary losses, reward shaping, or architectural changes -- serving as a minimal, plug-in modification to standard post-training pipelines -- models trained under perceptual starvation achieve substantial gains of 5% average relative improvement across diverse benchmarks.
arXiv:2607.04986v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This article tackles an important phenomenon in the syntax of Yemeni Ibbi Arabic (YIA), viz., wh-agreement, a phenomenon common to several languages including Greek, Indonesian, Lubukusu, Irish, etc. In YIA, wh-agreement manifests itself via agreement inflections on the Wh-Op, C, T/V, v. To account for this phenomenon, we propose an Agree across phases (AAP) approach anchored in the mechanism of Feature Inheritance (FI) in which Agree as MATCHING (AM) is a bit separated from feature valuation (FV). AM concerns Cs/vs, but FV Ts/Vs. Analyzing the agreement patterns observed between Wh-Op(erators), functional heads (precisely C, (T), v), and verbal complexes, we argue that the suffixes -eh, -uh, -nen, -um, having undergone grammaticalization process from Stannard Arabic (SA) third person pronouns, function as morphological marking of wh-agreement. Findings indicate that YIA data offer a unique empirical contribution to generative syntax, specifically concerning wh-agreement in this dialect operating via MATCHING mechanism. Our proposal straightforwardly accounts for wh-agreement cross-linguistically. This study provides further evidence that incorporating under-investigated typology provides further support for the universality of Universal Grammar (UG) by revealing how specific I-language operations reflect deeper, invariant principles of human language architecture. It concludes that the wh-agreement mechanism in YIA is more morphosyntactically robust than in languages such as Greek, Indonesian, Palauan, and Irish, providing compelling evidence for AAP as a UG approach to long-distance dependencies.
arXiv:2607.04989v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: We present a method for constructing intrinsic triangulations of closed discrete surfaces, in which edges correspond to shortest geodesic paths and faces decompose into geometric primitives inherited from the underlying mesh. Starting from a watertight input triangulation, the method progressively builds an intrinsic mesh through local optimization operations -- edge swaps, edge splits, edge collapses, and triangle splits -- performed directly on the surface without modifying the original geometry. Element size is controlled via a characteristic length field, and quality is enforced through angle-based criteria derived from intrinsic distances. Geodesic distances are computed exactly using a continuous Dijkstra approach, accelerated by an A* search strategy that reduces computation to roughly $3\%$ of the cost of standard propagation. The framework supports both refinement and coarsening, overcoming a key limitation of prior intrinsic methods based on developable triangles. As a by-product, the intrinsic triangulation provides a natural foundation for direct high-order mesh generation, bypassing the classical pipeline of first constructing a linear mesh and subsequently curving it. The method is validated on the Thingi10K dataset across nearly 5,000 geometrically complex models.
arXiv:2507.10058v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Optical tweezers have become a standard tool for manipulating microscale and nanoscale particles and probing their local environments. However, complex particle dynamics under optical forces typically require structured light fields, multi-beam traps, or engineered environments. Here we achieve complex particle dynamics in a single Gaussian-beam optical tweezer. The effect originates from higher-order Mie resonances supported by wavelength-scale particles. In our optical tweezer, small particles in the regime of Rayleigh scattering or the lowest-order dipole-type Mie modes remain confined at the beam center. By contrast, particles within the range of sizes corresponding to quadrupole-type Mie modes exhibit more complex behavior. In a linearly polarized Gaussian beam, these particles are trapped in a potential with two off-axis equilibria. We observe thermally driven hopping between these equilibria, with the hopping frequency controlled by the laser power. In a circularly polarized Gaussian beam, the particles are confined to a stable orbit and exhibit circular motion driven by the spin (circular-polarization) degree of freedom of the beam, with angular velocity dependent on the laser power. These results reveal higher-order Mie resonances as an intrinsic mechanism behind complex optical forces. This establishes Mie-resonant nanophotonics as a flexible platform for inducing and controlling complex motion in optical tweezers for nanoparticle manipulation as well as sensing of local environments.

arXiv:2607.04975v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: What distinguishes front from back? In physics, such directionality emerges only when an underlying symmetry is broken. Antiferromagnets that inherently break both space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries provide a striking example, exhibiting nonreciprocal optical responses that depend on the direction of light propagation. Beyond distinguishing antiferromagnetic domains, we show that this nonreciprocity can deterministically create them. Using mid-infrared light, we demonstrate deterministic switching of antiferromagnetic domains in the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet LiFePO4, where illumination from opposite sides selectively stabilizes opposite domain states. Remarkably, the switching persists over a broad wavelength range rather than being confined to a narrow transition-specific spectral region, overcoming the spectral and material constraints of resonance-based optical switching schemes. The broadband switching originates from the material's intrinsic nonreciprocity through optically generated heat currents. Our results establish nonreciprocity as a general principle for deterministically controlling symmetry-broken phases with light.
A Systematic Survey on Large Language Models for Evolutionary Optimization: From Modeling to Solving
arXiv:2509.08269v5 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly integrated with evolutionary computation to support optimization tasks. This survey primarily focuses on evolutionary optimization, i.e., optimization based on evolutionary computation. For brevity, we use the term optimization throughout to denote this scope. However, existing surveys typically examine isolated roles of LLMs and do not provide a unified view that connects optimization modeling with optimization solving. To address this gap, we systematically review recent developments through a workflow-oriented framework. First, we organize the literature into two primary stages: LLMs for optimization modeling and LLMs for optimization solving (in this survey, the terms optimization modeling and optimization solving are used as concise forms of optimization problem modeling and optimization problem solving, respectively). Second, we divide the solving stage into three paradigms according to the role of the LLM: stand-alone optimizers, low-level components embedded in optimization algorithms, and high-level managers for algorithm selection and generation. Third, we analyze representative methods, identify their technical limitations, and clarify their relationships with traditional optimization approaches. We further substantiate this taxonomy through benchmark systematization, baseline comparisons, and practitioner-oriented guidance, and we review interdisciplinary applications across the natural sciences, engineering, and machine learning. Based on the resulting analysis, we identify research directions toward dynamic, self-evolving, and agentic optimization ecosystems. An up-to-date collection of related literature is maintained at https://github.com/ishmael233/LLM4OPT.
arXiv:2509.22267v5 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Reliable detection of bearing faults is essential for maintaining the safety and operational efficiency of rotating machinery. While recent advances in machine learning (ML), particularly deep learning, have shown strong performance in controlled settings, many studies fail to generalize to real-world applications due to methodological flaws, most notably data leakage. This paper investigates the issue of data leakage in vibration-based bearing fault diagnosis and its impact on model evaluation. We demonstrate that common dataset partitioning strategies, such as segment-wise and condition-wise splits, introduce spurious correlations that inflate performance metrics. To address this, we propose a rigorous, leakage-free evaluation methodology centered on bearing-wise data partitioning, ensuring no overlap between the physical components used for training and testing. Additionally, we reformulate the classification task as a multi-label problem, enabling the detection of co-occurring fault types and the use of prevalence-independent metrics based on the ROC curve. Beyond preventing leakage, we also examine the effect of dataset diversity on generalization, showing that the number of unique training bearings is a decisive factor for achieving robust performance. We evaluate our methodology on four widely adopted datasets: Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Paderborn University (PU), University of Ottawa (UORED-VAFCLS) and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST bearing). This study highlights the importance of leakage-aware evaluation protocols and provides practical guidelines for dataset partitioning, model selection, and validation, fostering the development of more trustworthy ML systems for industrial fault diagnosis applications.
arXiv:2601.20841v4 Announce Type: replace Abstract: The Reynolds equation is derived from the incompressible Navier Stokes equations under the lubrication assumptions of a long and thin domain geometry and a small scaled Reynolds number. The Reynolds equation is an elliptic differential equation and a dramatic simplification from the governing equations. When the fluid domain is piecewise linear, the Reynolds equation has an exact solution that we formulate by coupling the exact solutions of each piecewise component. We consider a formulation specifically for piecewise constant heights, and a more general formulation for piecewise linear heights; in both cases the linear system is inverted using the Schur complement. These methods can also be applied in the case of non-linear heights by approximating the height as piecewise constant or piecewise linear, in which case the methods achieve second-order accuracy. We assess the time complexity of the two methods, and determine that the method for piecewise linear heights is linear time for the number of piecewise components. As an application of these methods, we explore the limits of validity for lubrication theory by comparing the solutions of the Reynolds and the Stokes equations for a variety of linear and non-linear textured slider geometries.
arXiv:2607.04478v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Automated chest X-ray classification remains challenging due to severe class imbalance, co-occurring pathologies, and the loss of localized features in conventional architectures. To address these, we propose an explainable hierarchical multi-view ensemble framework for the robust classification of 14 thoracic pathologies. The framework employs view-specific training by independently modeling frontal and lateral radiographs using an ensemble of five complementary convolutional neural networks. Replacing global average pooling, a multi-scale feature fusion strategy augmented with Convolutional Block Attention Modules (CBAM) preserves fine-grained intermediate representations while emphasizing high-level pathology-specific semantic features. To mitigate positive-negative imbalance and varying inter-class difficulty, models are optimized using a novel hybrid objective combining Asymmetric Loss with Adaptive Focal Loss. Beyond simple probability averaging, the framework incorporates a hierarchical meta-learning strategy where test-time augmentation (TTA) predictions and cross-model uncertainty measures are integrated into Level-1 gradient-boosting meta-learners (XGBoost, LightGBM, and CatBoost), followed by Level-2 stacking with optimized alpha blending. Evaluated on a large-scale CheXpert-style dataset, the framework achieves state-of-the-art macro-average AUROC scores of 0.9319 for frontal and 0.9154 for lateral radiographs. Furthermore, comprehensive explainability analysis using seven post-hoc attribution techniques demonstrates strong anatomical consistency and clinically meaningful decision localization. By integrating architectural diversity, multi-scale attention, hierarchical meta-learning, and rigorous explainability, the proposed framework provides a transparent, highly accurate, and clinically practical computer-aided diagnosis system for thoracic disease classification.
arXiv:2601.22901v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: In this paper, we study how sensing and communication should be jointly coordinated in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems to maintain timely situational awareness under reliability and resource constraints. We consider an ISAC-enabled base station that supports a remote source by dynamically choosing between sensing new state information and communicating previously acquired information, with the two operations semantically intertwined rather than serving separate targets and users. Both sensing and communication are unreliable and costly. The objective is to optimise a long-term cost that captures information freshness at the source, measured by the age of information (AoI), together with sensing and communication overheads. The resulting sequential decision problem is formulated as an infinite-horizon Markov decision process (MDP) with two-dimensional AoI states that capture information freshness at the source and at the base station. We prove that the optimal stationary policy admits a monotone threshold structure characterised by a nondecreasing switching curve in the AoI state space, and show that, as the base-station information becomes staler, the system increasingly favours sensing over communication. Our numerical analysis corroborates the theoretical findings.
arXiv:2607.05007v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper introduces a quantum-inspired computational framework for harmonic decision-making in music. The proposed approach formulates harmonization as an optimization problem within a structured combinatorial space, where multiple candidate chord sequences are evaluated under interacting musical constraints. The model combines an interference-based harmonization stage with a classical optimization procedure grounded in tonal harmony. The quantum-inspired component enables the parallel consideration of multiple harmonic alternatives, while the classical stage refines the resulting sequences to ensure structural coherence and stylistic plausibility. The framework is evaluated on selected musical examples, including Autumn Leaves and It's a Long Way to Tipperary. Quantitative analysis shows that the optimization stage significantly reduces chord density, increases harmonic stability, and improves functional organization. At the same time, expert evaluation highlights the importance of stylistic context, demonstrating that increased harmonic complexity is not always perceived as more natural. The results suggest that harmonic generation can be interpreted as a structured decision-making process in a constrained search space. The proposed approach provides a computational model that integrates domain-specific knowledge with an interference-based search mechanism. Although preliminary, this work indicates that quantum-inspired methods may offer a useful framework for modeling complex decision processes in creative domains such as music. The proposed framework contributes to ongoing research on quantum-inspired models of cognition and decision-making in complex biological and creative systems.

It implements an alternating maximization algorithm to generate a set of sparse loading vectors that collectively explain a large fraction of the variance in a dataset, while remaining non-redundant. The algorithm supports two definitions of non-redundancy: either orthogonality of the loading vectors or zero pairwise correlation between principal components (PCs). In the reported benchmarks, msPCA solves sparse PCA problems with thousands of features, achieving competitive runtimes while producing sparse components with controlled feasibility violations and a high fraction of variance explained.
arXiv:2507.18366v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Accurate uncertainty quantification remains a key challenge for standard LLMs, prompting the adoption of Bayesian and ensemble-based methods. However, such methods typically necessitate computationally expensive sampling, involving multiple forward passes to effectively estimate predictive uncertainty. In this paper, we introduce an approach enabling uncertainty estimation in LLMs without incurring the heavy inference latency typically associated with sampling methods. Specifically, we distill uncertainty-aware teachers - originally requiring multiple forward passes - into single-pass students, fine-tuned using LoRA. We compare two distinct distillation strategies: one in which the student employs traditional softmax-based outputs, and another in which the student leverages Dirichlet-distributed outputs to explicitly model epistemic uncertainty via evidential learning. Empirical evaluation on classification tasks demonstrate that such students can achieve comparable predictive and uncertainty quantification performance relative to their teachers, while requiring only a single forward pass.
arXiv:2509.15061v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Embodied agents are intelligent systems designed to perceive, reason, and act within the physical world. While the robotics community has long strived to build such versatile agents, a fundamental limitation persists: most current VLA-based models operate under a rigid ``Listen-and-Act'' paradigm. These systems assume instructions are unambiguous and execute them in a passive fashion, preventing them from resolving uncertainty through dialogue. To address this, we propose Ask-to-Clarify, a unified end-to-end framework that seamlessly integrates multi-turn disambiguation dialogue with low-level visuomotor control, eliminating the reliance on high-level action primitives or external planners. Specifically, Ask-to-Clarify synergizes a VLM-based Cognitive Planner with a Diffusion-based Motor Executor. To bridge the disparity between high-level disambiguation and low-level execution, we introduce a Semantic-Visual Alignment Adapter, which functions as a cross-modal interface to synthesize semantic intent with visual perceptual streams. Furthermore, we observe severe catastrophic forgetting: visuomotor fine-tuning completely erases dialogue capabilities. To overcome this, we propose a two-stage knowledge-insulation training strategy, effectively decoupling dialogue logic from physical manipulation. Extensive evaluations across 11 real-world tasks demonstrate that \framework{} significantly outperforms existing methods, offering a promising path toward building truly collaborative embodied agents.
arXiv:2607.05010v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of designing recommendation systems for social networks and e-commerce platforms from a control-theoretic perspective. We formulate recommendation design as an infinite-horizon state-feedback optimal control problem whose performance index rewards alignment/engagement while penalizing polarization, large deviations from an uncontrolled baseline, recommendation mismatch, control effort, and exposure disagreement across neighboring users. We derive explicit spectral conditions under which the reduced quadratic stage cost is strictly positive-definite, and we show that the failure of these conditions makes the resulting recommendation design exhibit pathological behaviors, such as unstable free modes, non-attainment of the infimum, or failure of the stationary affine synthesis.
Towards Realistic Remote Sensing Dataset Distillation with Discriminative Prototype-guided Diffusion
arXiv:2601.15829v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Recent years have witnessed the remarkable success of deep learning in remote sensing image interpretation, driven by the availability of large-scale benchmark datasets. However, this reliance on massive training data also brings substantial storage and computational costs. To address this challenge, this study introduces the concept of dataset distillation into the field of remote sensing image interpretation for the first time. Specifically, we propose discriminative prototype-guided diffusion (DPD), a diffusion-based generative distillation framework that condenses a large-scale remote sensing dataset into a compact and representative distilled dataset. To improve the semantic fidelity and diversity of the synthesized samples, we extract representative prototypes for each category in the latent space. We then construct hyperspherical semantic anchors around the prototypes to guide the reverse denoising trajectory. Furthermore, to enhance the discriminative quality of the generated samples, multiple candidates are generated for each prototype and ranked by a latent classifier using a logit-margin criterion, with the most discriminative candidates selected to form the final distilled dataset. Experiments on three high-resolution remote sensing scene classification benchmarks show that the proposed method can distill realistic, diverse, and discriminative samples for downstream model training. Code and pre-trained models are available online (https://github.com/YonghaoXu/DPD).
arXiv:2602.02948v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Inverse problems are fundamental to many scientific and engineering disciplines; they arise when one seeks to reconstruct hidden, underlying quantities from noisy measurements. Many applications demand not just point estimates but interpretable uncertainty. Providing fast inference alongside uncertainty estimates remains challenging yet desirable in numerous applications. We propose the Variational Sparse Paired Autoencoder (vsPAIR) to address this challenge. The architecture pairs a standard VAE encoding observations with a sparse VAE encoding quantities of interest (QoI), connected through a learned latent mapping. The variational structure enables uncertainty estimation, the paired architecture encourages interpretability by anchoring QoI representations to clean data, and sparse encodings provide structure by concentrating information into identifiable factors rather than diffusing across all dimensions. To validate the effectiveness of our proposed architecture, we conduct experiments on blind inpainting, computed tomography (CT), and initial-condition inference for the heat equation, demonstrating that vsPAIR is a capable inverse problem solver that can provide interpretable and structured uncertainty estimates.

To bridge this gap, we propose EPIC (Ethernet Polymorphic In-network Collective), an INC protocol specification and reference system built on the principle of "Unified Abstraction, Polymorphic Realization." EPIC introduces an abstraction compatible with standard Ethernet that aligns functional boundaries with participant roles, while offering polymorphic realizations tailored to varying hardware capabilities. We address three fundamental challenges: first, we employ a modular design that enables an evolutionary path from simple to complex implementations, allowing vendors to iterate their hardware incrementally; second, we apply formal verification methodologies to prove the correctness of all proposed polymorphic modes; and third, we develop a unified resource management model versatile enough for diverse INC scenarios. Extensive validation -- spanning model checking, packet/flow simulations, VM emulation, Tofino Testbed, and FPGA/RTL verification -- confirms EPIC's correctness, performance gain, and feasibility.
arXiv:2605.19626v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: We propose a scheme for direct laser deceleration of molecules based on a vibrational transition-mediated bichromatic force (VBCF). By precisely engineering mid-infrared optical fields, we establish coherent absorption-stimulated emission cycles while exploiting the long lifetime of vibrational excited states to suppress spontaneous decay and decoherence, rendering the deceleration process effectively non-dissipative. Unlike schemes based on electronic transitions, our approach completely circumvents the restrictive Franck-Condon factors. Using the fundamental vibrational transition of $^{13}$CO$_2$ as a test case, we achieve a deceleration of $1.45\times 10^5$~m/s$^2$ with negligible population loss over the full interaction time. This VBCF framework provides a general route to cold molecules applicable to any species with an allowed fundamental vibrational transition, opening broad prospects in cold chemistry and quantum metrology.

Building on previous iterations, the task required participants to develop systems capable of mention identification and identity-based coreference clustering. The 2026 edition specifically emphasizes long-range entities, defined as coreferential chains spanning significant distances, across many words and sentences. The task expanded its linguistic scope by incorporating five new datasets and two additional languages. These additions leverage version 1.4 of CorefUD, a harmonized multilingual collection comprising 27 datasets in 19 languages. In total, ten systems participated, including four LLM-based approaches (three fine-tuned models and one few-shot approach). While traditional systems still maintained their lead, LLMs demonstrated significant potential, suggesting they may soon challenge established approaches in future editions.

Traditional ASIC-only gateways fail to meet these escalating demands due to severe on-chip resource constraints and limited programmable flexibility, while pure software solutions or alternatives like disaggregated SmartNICs struggle to match terabit-scale line-rate throughput. To bridge this gap, we present Gryphon, a hyperscale cloud gateway built on a hybrid architecture that integrates DPUs directly into the switching ASIC's forwarding path. This design resolves the fundamental tension between capacity and speed, expanding table scale by up to 1000$\times$ and augmenting programmability, while sustaining 1.6 Tbps line-rate throughput at a cost of only ~8$\mu s$ in additional average latency. To manage this hardware heterogeneity, we introduce Hierarchical Co-Offloading (HLCO) in the data plane, achieving >99.9% fast path hit rate, while retaining software fallback for complex operations. In the control plane, we develop an abstraction layer (P4Bridge) that decouples hardware specifics from policy configuration. Gryphon has been operating at production scale for over a year, deployed on hundreds of nodes across multiple Availability Zones. We also share production measurements and operational experiences that serve as the first hyperscale-proven guidelines for next-generation DPU-augmented cloud gateways.
