An efficient multi-GPU implementation for the Discontinuous Galerkin ocean model SLIM
arXiv:2605.16082v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Unstructured-mesh ocean models are increasingly used for coastal applications due to their ability to represent complex geometries and apply local grid refinement where needed. However, their broader use has been hindered by their high computational cost, particularly for models based on the Discontinuous Galerkin finite element (DG-FE) method, which involves significantly more degrees of freedom than traditional finite volume or continuous finite element approaches. The rapid emergence of GPU-based high-performance computing architectures now offers a pathway to address this limitation, as DG-FE formulations are inherently well suited to massively parallel, element-wise computations. Here, we present a full 3D DG-FE ocean model implementation optimized for both single- and multi-GPU systems, with support for both NVIDIA and AMD architectures. We detail the computational strategies employed to achieve high performance, including memory layout optimization, kernel-level parallelization, and matrix-free solvers for key vertical processes. Benchmark results demonstrate that a single HPC-grade GPU (e.g. NVIDIA A100) delivers performance equivalent to approximately 1500 CPU cores, while replacing a 128-core CPU node with a 4xA100 GPU node yields a speedup of around 50x. Weak-scaling efficiency is maintained up to 1024 GPUs. We further demonstrate the model's capabilities on a real-world application in the Great Barrier Reef, achieving a spatial resolution five times finer than the most accurate existing model while maintaining a physical-to-numerical time ratio of 100. These results highlight how GPU-accelerated DG-FE methods can dramatically advance the capabilities of unstructured-mesh ocean modeling, enabling ultra-high-resolution coastal simulations that were previously infeasible.
LymphNode: A Plug-and-Play Access Control Method for Deep Neural Networks
arXiv:2605.16227v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are high-value intellectual property (IP), yet deploying them to edge environments exposes them to \textbf{unrestricted oracle access}, rendering them vulnerable to model extraction and inversion attacks. Existing defenses fail to address this practically: passive watermarking only offers post-hoc provenance, while active defenses impose prohibitive latency or require persistent access to sensitive training data. To bridge this gap, we propose \textit{LymphNode}, a novel post-hoc defense framework that acts as an intrinsic ``immune system" within the model. \textit{LymphNode} enforces a strict ``default-deny'' policy: it actively neutralizes model utility for unauthorized queries via \textbf{Generalized Sparse Universal Adversarial Perturbations (GSUAP)} injected into the feature space, effectively blocking gradient estimation and data inference. Utility is selectively restored only for authorized inputs carrying a stealthy feature-domain credential. Our framework is highly practical: it is \textbf{data-efficient}, establishing robust protection with fewer than 100 samples ($<1\%$ of training data), and \textbf{cross-dataset adaptable}, enabling protection using public surrogate datasets. \textit{LymphNode} thus provides a lightweight, immediately deployable defense for high-stakes scenarios where original training data is restricted or unavailable.
MIND: Decoupling Model-Induced Label Noise via Latent Manifold Disentanglement
arXiv:2605.16081v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: The paradigm of learning from automatic annotations driven by pre-trained experts and Foundation Models dominates data-hungry applications. However, it introduces a critical challenge: model-induced label noise. Unlike stochastic noise in classical robust learning, this noise stems from annotator inductive biases, manifesting as systematic errors tightly coupled with local feature manifolds. Existing methods relying on global transition matrices underfit these structural patterns, while learning instance-specific matrices remains mathematically intractable. We propose Model-Induced Noise Decoupling (MIND), a theoretically grounded framework addressing this dilemma. We demonstrate that the high-dimensional noise manifold can be decoupled into tractable, subspace-dependent components via Latent Manifold Disentanglement. Specifically, our Latent Decoupling Estimator (LDE) dynamically projects samples into latent structural clusters with consistent error modes, facilitating noise identifiability without ground-truth anchor points. To rigorously evaluate robustness, we adopt a hierarchical protocol: moving from controlled noise on CIFAR-100 to a structural stress test on large-scale real-world 3D datasets (S3DIS, ScanNet), where error patterns explicitly couple with geometric manifolds. Empirically, MIND significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods on these complex benchmarks and effectively corrects zero-shot hallucinations from Vision-Language Models (e.g., OpenSeg), highlighting its potential as a robust distillation framework for Foundation Models.
Traj-CoA: Patient Trajectory Modeling via Chain-of-Agents for Lung Cancer Risk Prediction
arXiv:2510.10454v2 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Large language models (LLMs) offer a generalizable approach for modeling patient trajectories, but suffer from the long and noisy nature of electronic health records (EHR) data in temporal reasoning. To address these challenges, we introduce Traj-CoA, a multi-agent system involving chain-of-agents for patient trajectory modeling. Traj-CoA employs a chain of worker agents to process EHR data in manageable chunks sequentially, distilling critical events into a shared long-term memory module, EHRMem, to reduce noise and preserve a comprehensive timeline. A final manager agent synthesizes the worker agents' summary and the extracted timeline in EHRMem to make predictions. In a zero-shot one-year lung cancer risk prediction task based on five-year EHR data, Traj-CoA outperforms baselines of four categories. Analysis reveals that Traj-CoA exhibits clinically aligned temporal reasoning, establishing it as a promisingly robust and generalizable approach for modeling complex patient trajectories. AgriMind: An Ensemble Deep Learning Framework for Multi-Class Plant Disease Classification
arXiv:2605.16076v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Plant disease detection is still largely manual in Bangladesh, where extension workers eyeball leaf samples across millions of smallholdings. We built AgriMind to automate this: an ensemble of ResNet50, EfficientNet-B0, and DenseNet121 trained on 20,638 PlantVillage images across 15 pepper, potato, and tomato disease classes. Transfer learning with frozen ImageNet backbones and 10 epochs of head-only training keeps the pipeline lightweight. Individual models hit 96--97% on the held-out test set, but averaging their softmax outputs pushes the ensemble to 99.23% -- a two-thirds cut in error rate. We tried biasing the average toward the best validation model; it backfired. Dropping any single model also hurt. Pepper and potato classify perfectly; tomato, with ten visually similar classes, still reaches 99.01%. On an NVIDIA T4 GPU the full ensemble runs at 53 FPS. Whether that translates to real-time mobile use depends on TensorFlow Lite optimization -- work we have not yet completed.
Ada-Diffuser: Latent-Aware Adaptive Diffusion for Decision-Making
arXiv:2605.16054v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Recent work has framed decision-making as a sequence modeling problem using generative models such as diffusion models. Although promising, these approaches often overlook latent factors that exhibit evolving dynamics, elements that are fundamental to environment transitions, reward structures, and high-level agent behavior. Explicitly modeling these hidden processes is essential for both precise dynamics modeling and effective decision-making. In this paper, we propose a unified framework that explicitly incorporates latent dynamic inference into generative decision-making from minimal yet sufficient observations. We theoretically show that under mild conditions, the latent process can be identified from small temporal blocks of observations. Building on this insight, we introduce Ada-Diffuser, a causal diffusion model that learns the temporal structure of observed interactions and the underlying latent dynamics simultaneously, and furthermore, leverages them for planning and control. With a modular design, Ada-Diffuser supports both planning and policy learning tasks, enabling adaptation to latent variations in dynamics, rewards, and latent actions. Experiments on simulated control and robotic benchmarks demonstrate its effectiveness in accurate latent inference and adaptive policy learning.
Reasoners or Translators? Contamination-aware Evaluation and Neuro-Symbolic Robustness in Tax Law
arXiv:2605.16052v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have significantly enhanced automated legal reasoning. Yet, it remains unclear whether their performance reflects genuine legal reasoning ability or artifacts of data contamination. We present a comprehensive empirical study of tax law reasoning approaches and implement a contamination detection protocol to rigorously assess LLM reliability. We show that performance can be inflated by contamination. Building on this analysis, we conduct a systematic evaluation, comparing monolithic LLMs with hybrid systems that translate statutory text into formal representations and delegate inference to symbolic solvers. We build a novel test suite designed to probe generalization to unseen documents via case and rule variations. Our findings indicate that legal reasoning is inherently compositional and that neuro-symbolic frameworks offer a more reliable and robust foundation for legal AI, as well as improved generalization to unobserved situations.
Looped SSMs: Depth-Recurrence and Input Reshaping for Time Series Classification
arXiv:2605.16048v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: State Space Models (SSMs) are inherently recurrent along the sequence dimension, yet depth-recurrence - reusing the same block repeatedly across layers, as recently applied in looped transformers - has not been explored in this model family. We show that a looped SSM with $k$ parameters iterated $L$ times consistently closely matches or outperforms a standard SSM with $k \cdot L$ independent parameters across four architectures (LRU, S5, LinOSS, LrcSSM) and six time series classification benchmarks, despite operating within a strictly smaller hypothesis space, as we formally establish. Since the larger model contains the looped model as a special case, this dominance cannot be explained by expressivity and instead points to parameter sharing across depth as a beneficial inductive bias that simplifies optimization. These results demonstrate that depth-recurrence is orthogonal to sequence-recurrence and independently beneficial. We further show that input reshaping is an equally neglected design axis: concatenating timesteps for low-dimensional inputs, or flattening and rechunking the joint feature-time dimension for high-dimensional ones, yields accuracy gains of 1-6% across all models, confirmed over 5 random seeds. Both techniques provide standalone improvements that compound when combined, suggesting that depth and input reshaping are two independent and underexplored design axes for SSMs on time series.
Self-supervised neural operator for solving partial differential equations
arXiv:2509.00867v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Neural operators (NOs) provide a new paradigm for efficiently solving partial differential equations (PDEs), but their training depends on costly high-fidelity data from numerical solvers, limiting applications in complex systems. We propose a self-supervised neural operator (SNO) that generates accurate and diverse training data on the fly without numerical solvers. SNO consists of three parts: a physics-informed sampler (PI-sampler) based on Bayesian PINNs for efficient data generation, a function encoder (FE) for compact input-output representations, and an encoder-only Transformer for operator learning, mapping boundary/initial conditions, source terms, and geometries to PDE solutions. We validate SNO on 1D steady/unsteady nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations, a 2D nonlinear PDE with varying geometries, and vortex-induced vibration of a flexible cylinder in fluid dynamics. SNO achieves high accuracy in all cases, and lightweight finetuning (O(100) trainable variables) further improves predictions with only a few hundred steps. This work provides a new route toward pretrained foundation models as efficient PDE surrogates.
ScreenSearch: Uncertainty-Aware OS Exploration
arXiv:2605.16024v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Desktop GUI agents operate under partial observability: visually similar screens can correspond to different underlying workflow states, so locally plausible actions can lead to sharply different outcomes. We frame this as a problem of computer/OS state exploration, where effective behavior requires both expanding the reachable frontier and reducing ambiguity before committing. We present ScreenSearch, a system that combines structural screen retrieval and deduplication with an ambiguity-aware PUCT graph-bandit for large-scale desktop exploration. The retrieval layer converts UIA trees into location-aware structural features, indexes related screens through sparse token search and metadata filters, and maintains a shared deduplicated state graph across VM workers. On top of this graph, we define a scalable ambiguity signal based on matched-action outcome dispersion. If similar screens produce different next states under the same action signature, the state should be probed further rather than treated as resolved. We use this signal together with frontier rewards to drive large-scale exploration and replay-start policy evaluation over the shared graph. Across 11 desktop applications, ScreenSearch collects over 1M screenshots and over 30K deduplicated states, yielding large exploration corpora with substantial cross-application and within-application diversity. On a fixed replay-start slice, we observe a clear novelty--ambiguity trade-off: some policies reduce ambiguity quickly while discovering little frontier. Ambiguity reduction alone is therefore not a sufficient exploration objective. Appendix ablations show that stronger proposal priors can materially improve unique-state discovery during corpus building. These results suggest that state identity, proposal quality, and ambiguity-aware search all matter when deciding when to probe and when to commit.
Dynamics-Level Watermarking of Flow Matching Models with Random Codes

Rather than embedding signals into model weights or outputs, we embed the watermark directly into the learned continuous dynamics -- the velocity field of a flow matching model. We formulate this as random coding over a continuous channel: a key-dependent perturbation is added during training, and the message is recovered at detection time from black-box queries. The perturbation is designed to leave the generated distribution unchanged. Experiments on MNIST and CIFAR-10 across different architectures confirm reliable message recovery, preserved generation quality, and chance-level decoding accuracy without the secret key.
Offline Semantic Guidance for Efficient Vision-Language-Action Policy Distillation
arXiv:2605.16241v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Billion-parameter Vision-Language-Action (VLA) policies have recently shown impressive performance in robotic manipulation, yet their size and inference cost remain major obstacles for real-time closed-loop control. We introduce \textbf{VLA-AD}, a distillation framework that uses a Vision-Language Model as an offline semantic supervisor to transfer large VLA teachers into lightweight student policies. Instead of relying only on low-level action imitation, VLA-AD augments teacher-provided 7-DoF action targets with high-level semantic guidance, including task phase anchors and multi-frame operating-direction descriptions. These auxiliary signals are used only during training: at test time, the student policy runs independently, with neither the VLA teacher nor the VLM required. We evaluate VLA-AD on three LIBERO benchmark suites. Using OpenVLA-7B as the teacher, our method produces a 158M-parameter student, yielding a $44\times$ reduction in model size while matching the teacher with only a $0.27\%$ average relative gap. The resulting policy runs at 12.5 Hz on an RTX 4090, achieving a $3.28\times$ inference speedup over OpenVLA-7B. We further show that the same semantic distillation pipeline generalizes to a different $\pi_{0.5}$-4B teacher, where the student outperforms the teacher on two suites and remains within $0.53\%$ on \texttt{libero\_goal}. Additional analysis indicates that phase-level supervision and multi-frame directional cues make the student less sensitive to noisy teacher actions, such as erroneous high-frequency gripper changes. Overall, VLA-AD demonstrates that offline semantic guidance from VLMs can substantially improve the efficiency, robustness, and deployability of VLA policy distillation.
From Guidelines to Guarantees: A Graph-Based Evaluation Harness for Domain-Specific Evaluation of LLMs
arXiv:2508.20810v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Rigorous evaluation of domain-specific language models requires benchmarks that are comprehensive, contamination-resistant, and maintainable. Static, manually curated datasets do not satisfy these properties. We present a graph-based evaluation harness that transforms structured clinical guidelines into a queryable knowledge graph and dynamically instantiates evaluation queries via graph traversal. The framework provides three guarantees: (1) complete coverage of guideline relationships; (2) surface-form contamination resistance through combinatorial variation; and (3) validity inherited from expert-authored graph structure. Applied to the WHO IMCI guidelines, the harness generates clinically grounded multiple-choice questions spanning symptom recognition, treatment, severity classification, and follow-up care. Evaluation across five language models reveals systematic capability gaps. Models perform well on symptom recognition but show lower accuracy on treatment protocols and clinical management decisions. The framework supports continuous regeneration of evaluation data as guidelines evolve and generalizes to domains with structured decision logic. This provides a scalable foundation for evaluation infrastructure.
Variational Autoregressive Networks with probability priors
arXiv:2605.16020v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Monte Carlo methods are essential across diverse scientific fields, yet their efficiency is frequently hampered by critical slowing down-a sharp increase in autocorrelation times near phase transitions. Although deep learning approaches, such as neural-network-based samplers, have been proposed to alleviate this issue, they face another serious problem: the difficulty of training the models. This difficulty partially stems from the overly general nature of original machine-learning architectures, which often ignore underlying physical symmetries and force networks to relearn them from scratch. In this paper, we demonstrate that incorporating physical priors into the model significantly enhances performance. Building upon existing strategies that integrate spin-spin interactions, we propose a framework that utilizes a prior probability distribution as a starting point for training. Our results for the Ising model, as well as for the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model, suggest that moving away from `blank slate' models in favor of physics-informed priors reduces the training burden and facilitates the simulation of larger system sizes in discrete spin models.
SemanticOpt: Towards LLM-Based Semantic Black-Box Optimization
arXiv:2510.25404v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Optimizing an experimental system can be extremely challenging when each experiment is expensive, time-consuming, or difficult to perform. Existing optimizers for expensive black-box problems, such as Bayesian optimization, are typically limited to numerical or categorical observations. They do not make use of broader domain knowledge, such as expert heuristics, relevant scientific papers, or similar previous experiments. Large language models (LLMs) can interpret this semantic information; however, even state-of-the-art LLMs struggle to reliably solve black-box optimization problems. We introduce SemanticOpt, a framework for semantic black-box optimization that equips LLMs with optimization capabilities by fine-tuning them on structured Bayesian optimization trajectories augmented with natural-language context. SemanticOpt jointly uses numerical and semantic evidence when proposing new experiments, while producing interpretable predictions aligned with Bayesian surrogate models. We construct a range of real-world optimization problems paired with semantic information to create a diverse benchmark for evaluating semantic black-box optimization. Across these domains, SemanticOpt outperforms both classical optimizers and existing LLM-based approaches on average when given relevant semantic information.
Accelerated Gradient Descent for Faster Convergence with Minimal Overhead
arXiv:2605.16017v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: In this paper, we present CT-AGD (Curvature-Tuned Accelerated Gradient Descent), an optimization method for non-convex optimization problems in deep learning training tasks. CT-AGD is a general boosting procedure that accelerates first-order methods by explicitly capturing the local curvature using finite-difference quotients, and the development of heuristics aimed at mitigating noise and bias introduced by stochastic mini-batch training. CT-AGD has a comparable storage and computational overhead as adaptive gradient methods such as Adam. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that CT-AGD achieves the same level of accuracy as the baseline first-order methods, yet reduces the required training epochs by 33% on average.
Sampling-Based Global Optimal Control and Estimation via Semidefinite Programming
arXiv:2507.17572v3 Announce Type: replace Abstract: Global optimization has gained attraction over the past decades, thanks to the development of both theoretical foundations and efficient numerical routines. Among recent advances, Kernel Sum of Squares (KernelSOS) provides a powerful theoretical framework, combining the expressivity of kernel methods with the guarantees of SOS optimization. In this paper, we take KernelSOS from theory to practice and demonstrate its use on challenging control and robotics problems. We identify and address the practical considerations required to make the method work in applied settings: restarting strategies, systematic calibration of hyperparameters, methods for recovering minimizers, and the combination with fast local solvers. As a proof of concept, the application of KernelSOS to robot localization highlights its competitiveness with existing SOS approaches that rely on heuristics and handcrafted reformulations to render the problem polynomial. Even in the high-dimensional, non-parametric setting of trajectory optimization with simulators treated as black boxes, we demonstrate how KernelSOS can be combined with fast local solvers to uncover higher-quality solutions without compromising overall runtimes.
Advances in laser-assisted nuclear decay and nuclear excitation
arXiv:2605.16014v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: From the synthesis and evolution of the elements to the celestial nuclear processes of stellar explosions and neutron star mergers, nuclear physics is the foundation of our understanding of the universe. After more than a century of progress, the field of nuclear physics remains vibrant. The rapid advancement of laser technology has opened unprecedented avenues in nuclear physics, driven by the interdisciplinary convergence of laser physics, nuclear structure, plasma science, and quantum dynamics. This emerging field enables studies on laser-induced nuclear excitation, laser assisted nuclear decay, and precision manipulation of nuclear isomers for optical clocks. This review comprehensively examines the research achievements over the past decade regarding the influence of lasers on radioactive charged particle emissions and nuclear excitation. Regarding theoretical developments, the review details various methods used to evaluate the interactions between lasers and nuclei, including the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for $\alpha$ decay, proton radioactivity, and two-proton radioactivity and Fermi's golden rule for nuclear excitation as well as the application and advancement of various theoretical models and approximation methods. In experimental research, the review synthesizes significant breakthroughs in laser induced nuclear excitation experiments, particularly emphasizing the excitation of the $^{229}$Th, $^{83}$Kr, and $^{45}$Sc. These achievements provide essential groundwork for future breakthroughs in both fundamental nuclear science and its broader technological applications.
MultiMat: Multimodal Program Synthesis for Procedural Materials using Large Multimodal Models
arXiv:2509.22151v3 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Material node graphs are programs that generate the 2D channels of procedural materials, including geometry such as roughness and displacement maps, and reflectance such as albedo and conductivity maps. They are essential in computer graphics for representing the appearance of virtual 3D objects parametrically and at arbitrary resolution. In particular, their directed acyclic graph structure and intermediate states enable a modular, interpretable workflow for interactive appearance modeling. However, creating such graphs remains challenging and typically requires professional training. While recent neural program synthesis approaches attempt to simplify this process, they solely represent graphs as textual programs, failing to capture the inherently visual-spatial nature of node graphs that makes them accessible to humans. To address this gap, we present MultiMat, a multimodal program synthesis framework that leverages large multimodal models to process both visual and textual graph representations for improved generation of procedural material graphs. We train our models on a new dataset of production-quality procedural materials and combine them with a constrained tree search inference algorithm that ensures static correctness while efficiently navigating the program space. Our experimental results show that our multimodal program synthesis method is more efficient in both unconditional and conditional graph synthesis with higher visual quality and fidelity than text-only baselines, establishing new state-of-the-art performance.
Probabilistic Seasonal Streamflow Forecasting Across California's Sierra Nevada Watersheds with Agentic AI
arXiv:2605.16178v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Accurate seasonal runoff forecasts are critical for managing California's reservoirs and water supply for millions of its residents. Winter snow accumulation provides a strong source of predictability of snowmelt-based runoff in the spring and summer months, but progressive hydroclimatic changes in the Sierra Nevada are altering its timing and volume. These changes reduce the skill of statistical forecasts trained on historical data, highlighting the need for improved forecasting systems that can capture the changing dynamics of snowmelt. Here we demonstrate that a collaborative workflow between an agentic AI assistant and an automated code-mutation system, both powered by large language models, can accelerate the development of competitive seasonal runoff forecasting systems. In our framework, the AI agent discovers relevant datasets, synthesizes domain knowledge from prior forecasting competitions and the scientific literature, and explores the space of model architectures, while the code-mutation system refines each of the solutions explored by the agent through Monte Carlo Tree Search over the code space. The resulting system forecasts monthly Full Natural Flow (FNF) at 1- to 6-month lead times across 23 Sierra Nevada watersheds using an adaptive ensemble of three XGBoost quantile regression sub-models with physics-informed feature engineering. Evaluated against California's operational Bulletin 120 forecasts over 2021-2025, the agent-evolved model achieves superior skill for early-season cumulative April-July runoff predictions, reducing watershed-averaged quantile forecast error by up to 29%, and offering a new paradigm for AI-driven scientific model development in the geosciences.
Near-tight Bounds for Computing the Fr\'echet Distance in d-Dimensional Grid Graphs and the Implications for {\lambda}-low Dense Curves
arXiv:2604.24135v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: The Fr\'echet distance is a popular distance measure between trajectories or curves in space, or between walks in graphs. We study computing the Fr\'echet distance between walks in the $d$-dimensional grid graphs, i.e. $\mathbb{Z}^d$ where points share an edge if they differ by one in one coordinate. We give an algorithm, that for two simple paths on $n$ vertices, $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximates the Fr\'echet distance in time $\widetilde{O}((\frac{n}{\varepsilon})^{2-2/d} +n)$. We complement this by a near-matching fine-grained lower bound: for constant dimensions $d \geq 3$, there is no $O((\varepsilon^{2/d}(\frac{n}{\varepsilon})^{2-2/d})^{1-\delta})$ algorithm for any $\delta>0$ unless the Orthogonal Vector Hypothesis fails. Thus, our results are tight up to a factor $\varepsilon^{2/d}$ and $\log(n)$-factors. We extend our results to imbalanced lower and upper bounds, where the curves have $n$ and $m$ vertices respectively, and also obtain near-tight bounds. Driemel, Har-Peled and Wenk [DCG'12] studied \emph{realistic assumptions} for curves to speed up Fr\'echet distance computation. One of these assumptions is $\lambda$-low density and they can compute a $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation between $\lambda$-low dense curves in time $\widetilde{O}( \varepsilon^{-2} \lambda^2 n^{2(1-1/d)})$. By adapting our lower bound, we show that their algorithm has a tight dependency on $n$ and a tight dependency on $\varepsilon$ as $d$ goes to infinity. A gap remains in terms of $\lambda$.
PersonaFingerprint: Measuring Persona Inference on Modern Websites with LLM-Driven Browsing
arXiv:2605.15962v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Website Fingerprinting (WFP) has traditionally focused on inferring which website a user visits from encrypted traffic metadata such as packet sizes and timing. In this paper, we identify and quantify a new privacy risk in modern web settings: an adversary can infer a user's persona using only packet-length and inter-arrival-time sequences. To study this risk at scale, we build an LLM-driven multi-agent browsing framework that enforces controllable persona constraints while a computer-use agent interacts with real websites and collects corresponding encrypted traffic traces. We formalize persona fingerprinting under both closed-set and open-world settings and further evaluate whether persona information is already embedded in representations learned by existing WFP models and can be amplified at low cost. Across 10 modern websites and 15 personas (plus an open-world class), persona inference achieves about 84% accuracy on mixed-site traffic; moreover, a lightweight multi-task objective can boost persona accuracy to around 80% while retaining strong site classification performance (about 93% baseline). Our results show that, on modern websites, encrypted traffic metadata can leak not only which site a user visits, but also how they browse and who is browsing.
Probabilistic Dating of Historical Manuscripts via Evidential Deep Regression on Visual Script Features
arXiv:2605.06475v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: We introduce a probabilistic approach for dating historical manuscript pages from visual features alone. Instead of aggregating centuries into classes as is standard in the previous literature, we pose dating as an evidential deep regression problem over a continuous year axis, allowing our neural network to output a full predictive distribution with decomposed aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty in a single forward pass. Our architecture combines an EfficientNet-B2 backbone with a Normal-Inverse-Gamma (NIG) output head trained with a joint negative-log-likelihood and evidence-regularization objective. On the DIVA-HisDB benchmark (150 pages, 3 medieval codices, 151,936 patches), our model scores a test MAE of 5.4 years, well below the 50-year century-label supervision granularity, with 93\% of patches within 5 years and 97\% within 10 years. Our approach achieves \textbf{PICP=92.6\%}, the best calibration among all compared methods, in a single forward pass, outperforming MC Dropout (PICP=88.2\%, 50 passes) and Deep Ensembles (PICP=79.7\%, 5 models) at $5\times$ lower inference cost. Uncertainty decomposition shows aleatoric uncertainty is a strong predictor of dating error (Spearman $\rho=0.729$), and a selective prediction about the most certain 20\% of patches can provide \textbf{0.5 years MAE}. We show that predicted uncertainty increases as image degradation worsens, spatial decomposition maps explain which script regions cause aleatoric uncertainty, and page-level aggregation reduces MAE to 4.5 years with $\rho=0.905$ between uncertainty and page-level error.
Instance and Universally Optimal Bounds for Imprecise Pareto Fronts
arXiv:2605.07523v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: In the imprecise geometry model, the input is an imprecise point set, which is a family of regions $F = (R_1, \ldots,R_n)$, where for each $R_i$ one may retrieve the true point $p_i \in R_i$. By preprocessing $F$, we can construct the output, in our case the Pareto front, on $P$ faster. We efficiently construct the Pareto front of an imprecise point set in the plane. Efficiency is interpreted in two ways: minimizing (i) the number of retrievals, and (ii) the computation time used to determine the set of regions that must be retrieved and to construct the Pareto front. We present an algorithm to construct the Pareto front for possibly overlapping rectangles that is \emph{instance-optimal} with respect to the number of retrievals, meaning that for every fixed input $(F, P)$, there is no algorithm that retrieves asymptotically fewer regions to compute the output. This is a strong algorithmic quality, as it means that our algorithm is competitive even to clairvoyant algorithms which know a correct guess of the output and only have to verify its correctness. In terms of algorithmic running time, instance-optimality is provably unobtainable. We instead present an algorithm which is within a $\log n$-factor of instance-optimality. This generalizes earlier results to overlapping input regions, at only a minor cost in running time. For unit squares, we present an algorithm that is not only instance-optimal in the number of retrievals, but also \emph{universally} optimal in terms of running time, meaning that for any fixed set of regions $F$, no algorithm has a better worst-case running time for all possible point sets $P$. This is the first universally optimal algorithm for overlapping planar input. Compared to previous work, this result improves the degree of overlap, the preprocessing time, the number of retrievals, and the running time.
When and Why Adversarial Training Improves PINNs: A Neural Tangent Kernel Perspective
arXiv:2605.15959v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are powerful surrogates for differential equations but are notoriously difficult to train due to spectral bias, stiffness, and poor accuracy on high-frequency or multiscale solutions. Adversarial training based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) has recently gained surprisingly strong empirical results in improving training, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. To this end, we propose a new analysis framework for adversarially trained PINNs, based on the key observation of how the discriminator in GANs can influence the training dynamics of PINNs. The framework first provides a much needed theoretical grounding to why and when adversarial training is effective in PINNs, then presents a unified analysis of GANs variants in such training, and finally leads to a new, practical, efficient training algorithm for PINNs. Empirical results demonstrate that our method can significantly reduce the pathology of PINNs training, thereby providing better models with superior performances, often several magnitudes more accurate than alternative methods.
