Swedish researchers map disability studies as tool for institutional reform

A new collection of research shows how critical disability studies is reshaping policy, education, and healthcare across Scandinavia by challenging embedded assumptions about ability. For policymakers and organizational leaders, the work offers a framework for identifying and removing systemic barriers that limit access and equity.

Originaltitel: Critical disability studies: applications and interventions across disciplines

Abstrakt

This editorial introduces a special collection that marks the 10-year anniversary of KritFunk, the Swedish Network for Critical Disability Studies, and showcases the breadth of contemporary Swedish research in the field. Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplines, the collection examines the meaning and implications of the ‘critical’ in Critical Disability Studies (CDS) by exploring its applications across education, healthcare, policy, media, art, and everyday practices. The contributions highlight the field’s transdisciplinary openness and demonstrate how CDS critically interrogates ableism, epistemic justice, and the normative assumptions that shape knowledge production, institutional practices, and public discourse. Taken together, the collection foregrounds the transformative potential of Swedish CDS research within a broader Nordic and international context.
