New framework helps large manufacturers navigate digital transformation

Researchers have created a roadmap that helps conglomerates systematically adopt Industry 4.0 technologies by first assessing their readiness, then sequencing upgrades strategically. The approach accounts for how different capabilities depend on each other—a critical oversight in existing models—and could save manufacturers time and money by preventing costly missteps during digital overhauls.

Originaltitel: Aligning digitalization readiness assessment with strategic roadmapping for Industry 4.0 implementation in conglomerate manufacturers

Abstrakt

This study develops an integrated framework for guiding conglomerate manufacturers through Industry 4.0 transformation by combining readiness assessment with strategic roadmapping. A validated readiness model was constructed using the Fuzzy Delphi method, identifying ten critical dimensions. Their interdependencies were then mapped through Fuzzy Interpretive Structural Modelling, revealing a six-level hierarchy. Based on these insights, a three-phase strategic roadmap was designed to reflect the structural complexity of large multi-unit enterprises. The roadmap supports firms in addressing weaknesses, balancing capabilities and achieving advanced digital objectives in a sequenced manner. Unlike existing models that largely focus on SMEs or treat readiness dimensions as independent, this study highlights the hierarchical interdependencies that shape transformation in conglomerates. The findings contribute to theory by integrating readiness and implementation into a single framework and to practice by offering decision makers a structured yet flexible roadmap for orchestrating large-scale Industry 4.0 adoption.
