New math model predicts how disagreement spreads across multiple issues

Researchers have developed a framework to predict how opinions evolve when people disagree on interconnected topics—and when some refuse to change their minds. The model could help companies, platforms, and policymakers understand and anticipate polarization dynamics in online discourse and organizational decision-making.

Originaltitel: Multidimensional signed Friedkin-Johnsen model

Abstrakt

The multidimensional signed Friedkin-Johnsen (SFJ) model introduced in this paper describes opinion dynamics on a signed network in which the agents hold opinions on multiple interconnected topics and are allowed to be stubborn. In the paper, we establish sufficient conditions for the stability of the multidimensional SFJ model, and analyze convergence to consensus in concatenated instances of this model.
