New wing design fixes dangerous stall problem in fighter aircraft

Researchers have identified geometry modifications that prevent sudden pitch-up failure in delta-wing aircraft at extreme angles of attack—a critical safety hazard. The fix extends safe flying range without sacrificing speed, potentially improving performance and safety for military and aerospace applications.

Originaltitel: Vortical flow control over a compound delta wing at high angles of attack

Abstrakt

The vortex-dominated flow field of various compound delta wing configurations is studied both numeri-cally and experimentally using the SOAR2 aircraft configuration. Results show the presence of a vortex breakdown occurring over the aft wing at high angles of attack, causing an undesirable pitch-up divergence. Three modifications to the baseline wing geometry have been tested to reduce and delay the pitch-up di-vergence, extending the usable range of angles of attack without increasing drag.
