Originaltitel: Parental challenges and support needs following a child's negative oral food challenge and food reintroduction

Abstrakt

BACKGROUND: Food allergies are a major public health issue for children. Oral food challenges are essential for accurate diagnosis and management, reducing unnecessary dietary restrictions and healthcare costs. This study aimed to describe parents' experiences of their child's oral food challenge with a negative outcome, including reflections on allergy history, daily life, and experiences before, during, and after the challenge, as well as food reintroduction. METHODS: Data were collected from parents whose children underwent oral food challenges through semi-structured telephone interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. FINDINGS: Three categories emerged: 1) Experiences for successful implementation, highlighting fear, motivation, and practical obstacles; 2) Healthcare professionals' role in preparation and safety, emphasizing knowledge and creating a safe environment; 3) Life after the challenge, focusing on motivation, strategies for reintroducing foods, and the importance of support and communication. DISCUSSION: Effective communication, thorough preparation, and a supportive environment are crucial for successful oral food challenges. Continuous follow-up helps reintroduce foods, reducing anxiety and improving family quality of life. Healthcare professionals play a vital role in ensuring safety and providing information and reassurance throughout the process. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Support systems like counseling and educational resources can help parents feel prepared and less anxious. Involving children and providing clear, age-appropriate information can enhance comfort and cooperation. Continuous follow-up is essential for successful food reintroduction and improving family quality of life.
