Decades of research reveals where gun violence clusters in cities

A comprehensive analysis of 50 years of studies identifies the specific neighborhood types and land uses that concentrate firearm violence in urban areas. The findings could help city planners and policymakers direct safety interventions more strategically, potentially reducing shootings through targeted urban design and enforcement.

Abstrakt

<p>This article reviews five decades of literature in English investigating the nature of locations where most firearm-related violenceoccurs in public places, with a focus on neighbourhood-level and land-use characteristics. A search for peer-reviewed articles inScopus,Web of Science and PubMed from 1970 to 2022 resulted in 112 articles. A bibliometric followed by a thematic analysis ofthe articles shed light on two questions: Which types of neighbourhood characteristics attract firearm-related violence? andWhat are the typical land uses associated with firearm-related violence? The article concludes by reporting examples fromresearch of safety interventions implemented to tackle firearm violence.</p>
