Scientists map three types of spaces to unlock collaboration across research disciplines

Researchers have created a framework identifying how space shapes teamwork in complex, multi-disciplinary research projects. The finding matters because organizations funding or managing cross-sector research collaborations can now better design environments and processes that actually drive transformative results instead of just checking collaboration boxes.

Originaltitel: Building a conceptual spatial framework: using spatial agency to enhance the transformative aspects of TD research

Abstrakt

Transdisciplinary (TD) research is a relational and transformative practice. Furthermore, it is a spatial practice. In fact, the concept of space plays an important role in TD research in that spatial concepts are used to describe the conditions, processes and outcomes of TD research. What is missing, however, is a perspective on space itself as a relational and becoming phenomenon and how such an understanding of space corresponds to the relationality of TD research as well as to its transformative capacity. This is the focus here. From a narrative review of spatial concepts commonly deployed with TD research, this article identifies three dimensions of space, which describe three distinct spatial ideals occurring within TD research. Differentiating the dimensions from theories of spatial agency, each one is then detailed based on what a mutual relationship between space and actors looks like. The three dimensions constitute a typology that is developed into a conceptual framework for space in TD research. The findings include, first the three dimensions, described as symbolic, functional and relational spaces, which together form a typology. This typology categorizes the many and interchangeably used spatial concepts within TD research and serves both an analytical and designerly purpose, identifying the productive relationship of space and actors in a TD process. Second, transformative spatial capacities are identified within the dimensions: enabling collaboration, enhancing collective ability and dealing with difference. Third, crucial spatial qualities that afford transformation are highlighted for each dimension, as sustaining contingency, being dynamic, and allowing for paradoxes. In summary, the conceptual framework allows us to understand spatial capacities and qualities that enhance the transformative aspects of TD research.
