Why women's fertility declines sharply in their late 30s and 40s

Researchers identified a specific cellular mechanism—occurring during the second stage of egg cell division—that causes chromosomal errors increasing with age. The finding could guide development of fertility treatments and help explain why maternal age remains the strongest predictor of miscarriage and genetic disorders like Down syndrome.
