Key proteins activate embryonic genes without using their primary function

Two proteins long thought to work through their chemical activity actually drive early embryo development through a completely different mechanism, according to new research. The finding could reshape how scientists design drugs targeting these proteins and may explain why some gene-regulation therapies fail.
