Abstrakt

<p>Sound has long aided relaxation and sleep. This practice continues today with the rise of online sound interventions. While music has traditionally dominated this domain, alternatives such as broadband noise, natural soundscapes, and specialized tones are gaining attention. However, since contextual and individual factors such as gender, age, socioeconomic status, and environment significantly impact sleep quality, research must go beyond experimenting with and designing sound stimuli alone, and further progress toward personalized, adaptable sleep interventions.This chapter examines the potential of sonic interaction design for sleep, focusing on nonmusical sounds and interactive elements tailored to individual needs. We highlight diverse examples, from data-driven auditory feedback and sonification of sleep data, to sonic interactions embedded in everyday bedroom objects, from audio-only games and immersive interventions, to robots that use sound to soothe the sleeper. Finally, we examine key challenges in this field, emphasizing the urgent need for robust evaluation methods to assess sonic interaction designs in real-world contexts.</p>
